Creative Ways to Give
-
Many families will choose to rearrange their priorities and give up something in their current budget in order to give more. Priority budgeting may mean postponing a planned expenditure such as a new car, vacation, home remodeling or other major purchase. Many Christian people find a way to give more through sacrificial commitments made in faith coupled with priority budgeting.

Often, families have significant short-term expenditures for special needs. One example is the large expenditure a family incurs for a child to attend college. A family realized that their daughters would be graduating from college during the three years of the capital funds campaign and, as a result, they were able to increase their commitment to years two and three of the campaign by thousands of dollars. Another example would be the cash flow that is freed up when a car loan is paid.
-
Some people receive periodic increases in salary or bonuses from their employers. The temptation for many of us is to increase our lifestyle to fit the higher income. In many instances, families have decided that they will commit the full amount of salary increases.
-
A young man decided that two collectors’ baseball cards worth over $20,000 he had been holding for a number of years would be the most appropriate means of touching sacrifice for his family. Some families save money over a period of years for a special project. One couple had saved $80,000 to build a lake cabin. When their church entered a giving campaign, they decided the needs of the church were greater than their need for a second home.
-
Often, people pray for God to show them a way they can give beyond what they can presently see or afford. Sometimes the answers come unexpectedly. A couple in Alabama had been praying for weeks about their commitment to the church. Much to their surprise, they received an inheritance of several thousand dollars. They gave the entire amount to their church as part of their three-year commitment in addition to a commitment from their regular income.
-
Some family members have extra time they would be willing to use in a part-time job to be able to give more to the church. This is particularly true for families whose children are grown and away from home and for semi-retired or retired couples. One man was in the process of retiring when his church entered a giving campaign. He and his wife secured new jobs and gave the first three years of their retirement income to the capital campaign.

Many people own assets that have achieved unrealized gains in value over the years. That is good news. The bad news is that if these assets were sold, some portion of the gain could be lost to taxation. Gifts of appreciated assets — typically investment securities or real estate — can be very advantageous to both the donor and to the church. By transferring ownership of the asset to the church, the donor avoids income taxes on the sale of the asset. Unlike gifts of cash that have already incurred an income tax, gifts of appreciated assets avoid the incurrence of capital gain tax. In addition, the donor receives an income tax charitable deduction for the full market value of the asset. That, in effect, makes these gifts less costly to make. Importantly, before making a commitment of this
type, please consult your CPA, tax attorney or other financial advisor.

Giving does not have to be in equal increments over the two or three-year period of the campaign. You might be able to give more in the third year than the first two. As you think about your financial commitment to the campaign, think not of just your potential to give right now, but also of your potential to give in the future. It might be that you can make a three-year commitment in which 20 percent is given in the first year, 30 percent in the second year, and 50 percent in the third.

We inherited a set of sterling silver goblets that have appreciated in value, particularly with the recent run-up in the value of precious metals. We plan to sell these goblets and give the proceeds to the building campaign.

This sounds so small but I wanted to look for things that would impact my day to day and this has been a continual reminder these last few weeks: I watched a YouTube video on how to live more frugally and the first suggestion was to use [whatever you have] up completely before you open/buy a new one, specifically with lotions, etc. I probably should have been living this way before, but now every time I see soap, shampoo, etc I think "Use me up, Lord! I don't want anything to be left in me!" and it gets me excited about other opportunities.

My wife and I are reviewing all of our leisure subscriptions and foregoing paid entertainment streaming services (Netflix, HBO, Apple TV, etc.) during this campaign to save money towards our commitment to the building campaign.

For this season and campaign, I'll be leaning into more practical/sentimental DIY and less expensive, or arts and crafts kinds of gifts for my friends and family.

Only having homemade coffee this year, and not buying coffee outside. Doing the math, if a coffee is $7 average in SF, and I buy a coffee around 5 times a week, that's $35 a week and $140 a month. I'll be saving and giving $1,680 a year to our building campaign just from coffee alone! WOW.

The Father's House has been the largest impact on my faith journey the last two years as I have fully committed my life to God and publicly declared my love for Him through baptism. Despite not living in San Francisco, I listen to the sermons weekly and feel moved by them. With the resources God has gifted me, I want to help move the Christian faith forward and invest in the future of Christianity, as well as the work God is doing in San Francisco. God has given me a new, incredible job the last several months that has introduced me to more Christians than ever in the hospital setting. I am incredibly excited to invest in the campaign!

I’ve been following TFH SF journey since the beginning. Born and raised in the city I’ve always longed for a life giving church that could help transform lives, a place that’s healthy. I moved out to the East Bay in 2020 but still have family in the city and still have a heart for this city. I’d love to participate in this campaign as this building is also close to my heart. I attended VOP on and off from elementary through high school. I ultimately graduated from this school in 2005. That is where I learned to have a relationship with God, I learned leadership and faced some of the hardest moments in life. I could not think of a better church family to own this building and look forward to visiting when I’m in the city. I’d love to join the campaign. Please let me know how I can participate from afar.

We are getting married July 2026 and as much as we wanted to savor every penny for our wedding and moving in together, we knew God had bigger plans. Bigger plans for this city, bigger plans for our lives, and bigger plans for the salvation of our family and friends. We prayed and God touched our hearts to give generously and give wholeheartedly. We are deciding to cut back on our spendings for our future home (I really wanted a LoveSack couch but it can wait haha) and we are being more mindful of what we are spending for the wedding. Revival is coming to San Francisco, and we are more than honored to partner with our home church, The Father’s House. 🫶
Give.
