Creative Ways to Give

Many families will choose to rearrange their priorities and give up something in their current budget in order to give more. Priority budgeting may mean postponing a planned expenditure such as a new car, vacation, home remodeling or other major purchase. Many Christian people find a way to give more through sacrificial commitments made in faith coupled with priority budgeting.

Often, families have significant short-term expenditures for special needs. One example is the large expenditure a family incurs for a child to attend college. A family realized that their daughters would be graduating from college during the three years of the capital funds campaign and, as a result, they were able to increase their commitment to years two and three of the campaign by thousands of dollars. Another example would be the cash flow that is freed up when a car loan is paid.

Some people receive periodic increases in salary or bonuses from their employers. The temptation for many of us is to increase our lifestyle to fit the higher income. In many instances, families have decided that they will commit the full amount of salary increases.

A young man decided that two collectors’ baseball cards worth over $20,000 he had been holding for a number of years would be the most appropriate means of touching sacrifice for his family. Some families save money over a period of years for a special project. One couple had saved $80,000 to build a lake cabin. When their church entered a giving campaign, they decided the needs of the church were greater than their need for a second home.

Often, people pray for God to show them a way they can give beyond what they can presently see or afford. Sometimes the answers come unexpectedly. A couple in Alabama had been praying for weeks about their commitment to the church. Much to their surprise, they received an inheritance of several thousand dollars. They gave the entire amount to their church as part of their three-year commitment in addition to a commitment from their regular income.

Some family members have extra time they would be willing to use in a part-time job to be able to give more to the church. This is particularly true for families whose children are grown and away from home and for semi-retired or retired couples. One man was in the process of retiring when his church entered a giving campaign. He and his wife secured new jobs and gave the first three years of their retirement income to the capital campaign.

Many people own assets that have achieved unrealized gains in value over the years. That is good news. The bad news is that if these assets were sold, some portion of the gain could be lost to taxation. Gifts of appreciated assets — typically investment securities or real estate — can be very advantageous to both the donor and to the church. By transferring ownership of the asset to the church, the donor avoids income taxes on the sale of the asset. Unlike gifts of cash that have already incurred an income tax, gifts of appreciated assets avoid the incurrence of capital gain tax. In addition, the donor receives an income tax charitable deduction for the full market value of the asset. That, in effect, makes these gifts less costly to make. Importantly, before making a commitment of this
type, please consult your CPA, tax attorney or other financial advisor.

Giving does not have to be in equal increments over the two or three-year period of the campaign. You might be able to give more in the third year than the first two. As you think about your financial commitment to the campaign, think not of just your potential to give right now, but also of your potential to give in the future. It might be that you can make a three-year commitment in which 20 percent is given in the first year, 30 percent in the second year, and 50 percent in the third.

In short, Welcome Home is a two-year transformational journey that enables us to make a place for more people to discover Jesus through the renovation of our new, permanent home. Through discipleship in generosity, we believe we can see the TFHSF family raise $14 million over the next two years to accomplish this goal debt-free. This will position us to use every future dollar that would have been spent on loan repayment to build the Kingdom of Jesus through missions, outreach, church-planting, benevolence, and generosity.

We are deeply focused on everyone at TFHSF seeing their giving as an integral part of the transformational process. Our first priority is 100% participation in the process. Even if someone wrote us a check today for the full $14 million, we would still make this our emphasis. Whether you are just starting in your giving journey or you are a very committed giver, we all have a next step to take and room to grow in this area.

We have all been there, where we came to Jesus and had to be challenged to grow into being a generous Christian. The apostle Paul exhorted Pastor Timothy to “encourage” his people to be generous and not be delinquent in doing that. So those who have not participated in giving much, or at all, take the plunge; start creating and expanding your generosity story. We encourage you to use the Welcome Home journey as your “test” to see how faithful God is in return. Place your treasure into TFHSF and your heart will follow, your faith will expand, your trust in God will grow, and your DECLARATION that God is FIRST will deepen. Ephesians 3:20-21 says, “He will do exceedingly abundantly above and beyond all that we can ask, think or imagine.” That blessing can be a full range of blessings, yet it can be a financial return to you, but for many, they testify to blessings that are far greater than just a financial return, including breakthroughs in relationships, health, vocations, attitudes, habits, hang-ups, healings, etc. That’s the transformation story that you are creating for you and your family. Paul, in Philippians 4:17, gave his motivation for why he exhorted generosity so much to the New Testament churches, “I am not trying to get something from you, but I want you to receive the blessings that comes from giving.” That’s our motivation as well, to see YOU blessed, even as we BUILD the Kingdom together in our region.

First and foremost, you pray and seek God's direction on what He is asking of you. Prepare your heart to hear Him and then listen to what He says; engage in personal reflection with God. Recognize that this may involve a struggle as you sense God’s call to rearrange life priorities, spending habits, and give from stored resources. Expect your commitment to grow over time from token, to generous, to sacrificial generosity. Follow His leading, and prepare to be amazed, because we serve an awesome God and He is going to move in huge ways.

As you consider your financial commitment over the next two years, factor in the following:
It is over and above your current giving for two years.
It is discerned by prayer.
It is not equal giving, but equal sacrifice.
It is planned from income, altered spending, income generation, and stored resources.

It recognizes that we all have different financial capacities, meaning we cannot use a fair share approach to giving. The goal is for everyone sacrificing. From the smallest gift to the largest, every person can say, "This gift is sacrificial for me".

A simple definition is: giving up something I want, something I need, or something that represents security. Basically, it is deciding upon what I can give up, do without, postpone, or alter in order to give to TFHSF over the next two years.

Absolutely. King David said, "I will not present burnt offerings to the Lord my God that have cost me nothing". The essence of sacrifice is that it costs us something. This type of giving demonstrates our reliance and faith in Him.
